Our General Surgery program includes four hours of protected didactic time weekly as well as a dedicated simulation curriculum.

The didactics consist of a combination of resident- and faculty-led lectures, board prep, journal club, and sessions dedicated to patient safety, health quality, and physician wellness. Biomedical ethics are the focus of quarterly lectures.

Our open and laparoscopic simulation curriculum is nearly 100% methanol cadaver based, and our robotic simulator ranks as the most widely utilized in the country. Albany Medical Center is a certified FLS testing center.

Resident rotations provide the opportunity for increasing responsibility and autonomy, and cover four sites within a 25-mile radius, including a VA medical center and two regional community hospitals.

Our Wellness Committee organizes a yearly calendar of department-funded social events for residents and faculty that focus on health, wellness, balance, fitness, and camaraderie.

We are proud of the strengths of our program, including a vast and diverse clinical volume, a dedicated and approachable faculty committed to the training and well-being of our residents, resident happiness and camaraderie, and a post-graduate track record of strong fellowship and employment opportunities.
