Opportunities for College Undergrads

Applications for the 2026 Summer Research Program will be accepted from Nov. 1, 2025 through Feb. 28, 2026.
Applications received after Feb. 28, 2026 will only be considered if positions are still available.

We offer college students who have completed their sophomore or junior year the opportunity to participate in our Summer Undergraduate Research Program. If you are interested in pursuing an MD, PhD or MD/PhD, our program will provide you with a glimpse into life beyond your undergraduate years.

Activities

  • Mentored hands-on research opportunities in inflammatory and vascular diseases, atherosclerosis, wound healing, pulmonary and kidney diseases, or cancer biology
  • Exposure to state-of-the-art equipment, laboratories, and experimental approaches
  • Weekly meetings with scientists and physicians, journal clubs, and seminars
  • A research symposium at the end of the summer with an opportunity to present a summer research project

Program & Financial Information

This program is a 10-week, paid internship from June 1 to Aug. 7, 2026. Participating interns will receive a bi-weekly paycheck.

Criteria for Admission

  • We welcome applications from college-enrolled rising junior or senior undergraduates. Priority will be given to science majors, or students who have completed rigorous laboratory science coursework, and have maintained a GPA at or above 3.0.
  • Computational- and quantitative-minded students are also encouraged to apply.
  • We are committed to providing opportunities for students from underrepresented groups to prepare for their pursuit of advanced degrees. If this describes you, please indicate this in your personal statement, as it may qualify you to receive a Carl E. Touhey Scholarship.
  • Applicants must commit to the full 10-week program.
  • Applicants must attend a virtual orientation session one month prior to the start of the program.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Send the following attachments in a single email to Miranda Bryant at [email protected], with the subject line: 2026 Summer Research Program – APPLICANT’S NAME. Please be sure to include all information listed below, as incomplete applications will not be considered.

  1. Personal statement that describes the applicant’s relevant experience, career goals, motivation for applying, and how the applicant hopes to benefit from the program. Indicate which graduate degree (e.g., PhD, MD, MS) you are most interested in pursuing in your graduate education.
  2. Official copy of the applicant’s most recent undergraduate transcript.
  3. Letter of recommendation from an undergraduate instructor, professor, or other qualified professional on institutional letterhead. This person should be familiar with the applicant’s aptitude in the sciences and/or speak to the applicant’s relevant experience, goals, and motivations.
  4. Resume that includes the applicant’s contact information (home address, phone number, and current email address), educational background including college major, and list of extracurricular activities, employment experience, research experience, and any leadership roles.

Applicants will be made aware of final decisions by March 31, 2026.
