Urological Surgery Residency

Fully accredited by the ACGME, our Urological Surgery Residency Program emphasizes the development of surgical technique, clinical competency, teaching, and research.

Clinical Expertise, Teaching & Research

Our goal is to produce superb clinicians who give of themselves to the community and who also excel in teaching and research.

Clinically, we emphasize the development of surgical technique and a thorough understanding of the indications and contraindications to surgical intervention. Our program has a large surgical volume, but our residents also gain extensive experience with office-based urology.

To develop clinical competence, residents are exposed to a wide range of adult and pediatric patients with urologic abnormalities and diseases. We emphasize the importance of resident involvement in the outpatient setting, starting at the intake history and physical examination, as well as in the planning of diagnostic testing. Whenever possible, the care plan will be a joint venture between residents and attending urologists. In-hospital care of urology patients in the preoperative, operative, postoperative, and post-discharge setting is led by the residents with close faculty supervision. Virtually all major surgery performed on the service is done by the residents under the direct supervision of the faculty.

By the time our residents reach their Chief year, they are able to function virtually independent of the attending staff. In addition to providing care, chief residents supervise and act as consultants to the more junior residents. We foster an environment where teaching is emphasized and rewarded, and provide ample opportunities for practicing these skills.

Our residents also have the opportunity to participate in the full range of basic science and clinical research. In addition to a dedicated research rotation, each resident is strongly encouraged to pursue clinical projects with the oversight of a faculty member. This often leads to the publication and presentation of research data in regional, national, and international journals and meetings.
