Welcome! On behalf of my colleagues in the Division of Trauma and Critical Care Medicine, it is my pleasure to introduce you to the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program at Albany Medical College. Our ACGME-accredited, one-year training program offers extensive educational and clinical opportunities, a skilled and engaged faculty, and state-of-the-art resources for the care of the severely injured and the critically ill.

Albany Medical Center is home to the only American College of Surgeons verified adult Level I trauma center in northeastern New York, which has long been regarded for its high level of expertise and quality in caring for trauma patients. The Albany Med Health System serves 25 counties and a large, diverse patient population. Its trauma center is often the busiest in the entire state of New York, which provides a rich learning platform for our fellows.

Our program engages physicians in the full scope of acute care surgery, including emergency surgical care and the management of critically ill and injured patients. Fellows can elect to rotate through a variety of critical care environments, including medical, surgical, anesthesia, neurosciences, radiology and more. They are led by a multidisciplinary faculty who place a strong emphasis on clinical excellence as well as a thoughtful approach to the ethical considerations and dilemmas that are often attendant in critical care. We feel our training and academic curriculum produce surgeons who go on to become skilled practitioners, educators and leaders in critical care. We thank you for your interest in our program and invite you to explore these pages to learn more.

Sincerely,

Marcel Tafen, MD, FACS
