Albany Medical Center Inpatient Experience: During this experience, fellows see a wide variety of emergent and non-emergent consults throughout the hospital. As a tertiary care center, complex cases are referred to Albany Medical Center, giving fellows an opportunity to manage challenging endoscopic as well as clinical cases such as GI bleeds, food impactions, foreign body ingestion, acute liver failure, complications of cirrhosis, inflammatory bowel disease, biliary diseases and more.

Albany Medical Center Outpatient Clinic: Fellows have their own panel of patients, experiencing a wide variety of pathology ranging from simple GI cases to complex second- and third-opinion consultations. This rotation provides fellows the opportunity to learn to integrate other health and behavioral aspects of patient care as well as managing patients’ GI conditions.

Ambulatory Rotation: Fellows are trained in GI motility, including esophageal manometry, anorectal manometry, 24-hour Ph/impedance testing and Bravo and SmartPill studies. They are also responsible for reading all the small bowel capsule endoscopies. During this experience, the fellow also arranges monthly Pathology and Radiology conferences and participates as a member of the outpatient IBD team.

Biliary: This experience allows fellows to participate in inpatient biliary consults. Fellows learn to understand biliary pathology and the basics of EUS, ERCP and other advanced endoscopic procedures with hands-on experience based on the interest and ability of individual fellows.

Hepatology Experience: Fellows on this rotation spend a month learning outpatient Hepatology with our hepatologist. They have their own panel of patients. They also perform endoscopic procedures in this exclusive population and learn the pathology. They are involved in interpretation of fibro scans and learning pathology slides of interesting cases with the GI pathologist.

Elective Options: Fellows can choose to do electives with other services such as nutrition, radiology or colorectal surgery, or they can request an away elective to enhance a particular area of interest such as IBD, transplant hepatology or motility.

Research: Fellows are expected to participate in scholarly activity such as initiating their own research projects, writing case reports, manuscripts and book chapters. Our fellows have presented several posters each year at the ACG, DDW and other national and local conferences. Our trainees are encouraged to attend the postgraduate courses at these meetings.

Albany VA Medical Center VA Experience: During this experience, fellows are responsible for inpatient consults as well as outpatient endoscopies. They are exposed to a slightly different pathology and get strong hands-on experience with different endoscopic procedures as well as sedation techniques using procedural sedation.
