The EMS fellowship is an ACGME-accredited fellowship program lasting a minimum of one year. Over this 12-month period, our educational curriculum covers core EMS topics utilizing David Cone’s two-volume textbook, Emergency Medical Services: Clinical Practice and Systems Oversight. Education is delivered in a variety of methods and settings, ranging from weekly EMS faculty-delivered fellow conferences, special events, training courses, and national EMS conferences. Over the year, fellows have access to several EMS-specific training courses provided at local, regional, and national levels. Some examples of these opportunities are Emergency Vehicle Operations, Advanced Disaster Life-Support, HAZWOPER, and CBRNE Medical Operations, to name a few. Albany Medical Center provides medical direction for NY TF-2 (State USAR) in which fellows become active team members with opportunities for extending training in technical rescue (confined space, water operations, high/low angle rope rescue, etc.). Several of our faculty also have special interest in tactical medicine, with numerous opportunities for specialized training and active mission response.

In addition to receptive educational opportunities, we recognize the importance of EMS physicians becoming effective teachers and provide several opportunities to deliver content to varied audiences, ranging from civilian bystanders, EMS personnel, and resident physicians. While our fellowship follows the standardized ACGME curriculum, we very much focus on fostering and developing a fellow’s special interests from early fellowship commencement.

Fellows have opportunities to work with a wide variety of organizations and on numerous initiatives.
