We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisite: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course description: This elective offers the interested 4th year student extensive exposure in the practice of vascular and endovascular surgery. In the course of the rotation you will be exposed to the full array of vascular presentations and participate in the care and treatment of those patients. The Albany Medical Center serves as the major vascular surgery referral center for eastern NY and western Massachusetts. From this patient pool, broad exposure can be obtained for open and endovascular solutions to a wide variety of patient problems. Exposure to treatment of thoracic and abdominal aneurysms, occlusive disease of the limbs, cerebrovascular disease, venous disease, dialysis access will be available. The student will have the opportunity to participate in the initial consultation, diagnostic workup, pre, intra and post-operative care of the vascular patient. Students will participate in our morning case conferences, didactic lectures, and journal clubs. The goal is to integrate the student into our vascular care team, which includes faculty, residents, fellows, nurses, angiography technologists and vascular laboratory staff.
Educational Objectives: At the end of the rotation, the student will have the ability to: Perform admission history, physicals, and elective consultations on the vascular service. Outline differential diagnosis and order appropriate testing to arrive at a correct diagnosis. Integrate history physical findings, diagnostic testing and imaging to formulate basic treatment plan. Perform basic surgical techniques, including wound closure, dressing changes and learn fundamental techniques of vascular and and endovascular surgery. Function as part of the vascular care team in a professional and culturally competent manner.
Types of Patients: All patients evaluated or cared for by the vascular surgery service at Albany Medical Center and in the offices of the vascular surgery service.
