We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisite: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course Description: This elective course offers the interested fourth year student a broad exposure to the practice of plastic and reconstructive surgery. The wide scope of clinical Plastic Surgery practiced at Albany Medical Center Hospital provides the subject material for the student's introduction to problems encountered and the development of potential surgical solutions. In-depth exposure to general reconstruction, hand surgery, microsurgery, breast reconstruction, pediatric plastic surgery, craniomaxillofacial surgery, and aesthetic surgery will be available. The student will have an opportunity to participate in linear patient care from the initial consultation, the laboratory and radiological work-up, the preoperative surgical planning, the plastic surgical operation, and the post-operative care. Directed readings pertaining to the clinical material at hand, lectures presented during the divisional didactic lecture series and case reviews will round out the student's experience. Each student will be expected to make a 15-minute presentation at the end of the rotation to the division members. Research participation is encouraged and published literature contributions have occurred. The students will have ample opportunity to interact with both the Plastic Surgery residents and faculty.
Educational Objectives: The student will have the ability to: 1. Perform admission history and physical examinations for patients with cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery problems. 2. Outline a differential diagnosis and demonstrate the use of a differential diagnosis in the formulation of diagnostic and therapeutic plans. 3. Conduct daily rounds and construct and deliver organized and succinct presentations on assigned patients using relevant interim history and physical exam findings. Write appropriate daily follow-up notes for assigned patients. 4. Interpret and explain laboratory and imaging results for patients with surgical diseases. 5. Perform basic surgical skills, including suturing and the selection of appropriate dressing care for wounds. 6. Exhibit professional and respectful interactions with members of the clinical team, consultants, and support staff. 7. Communicate with and educate patients and visitors with consideration of cultural, age, and other socioeconomic factors.
Types of Patients: Adult and pediatric plastic surgery patients at Albany Medical Center.
