We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Name: Orthopaedic Surgery

Course Description: Prerequisite: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course Description: During this 4-week rotation students receive an in-depth exposure to both ambulatory and hospital-based orthopaedics. The student becomes a member of the orthopedic surgical team and will actively participate in all phases of patient care. Each morning, students meet with the orthopaedic residents and rounding attendings to review the cases seen in the ED the day before. Evaluation of the patient and indications for orthopedic treatment will be stressed. This will also include interpretation of orthopedic radiographs. Students then spend time in the office with the attending physician or in the OR at AMC. Grand Rounds are held every Wednesday morning at the Bone and Joint Center and teaching sessions are held each Friday morning at AMC on various orthopedically oriented subjects. There is major emphasis on anatomy and pathology.
Educational Objectives: The student will demonstrate the ability to: 1. Identify basic fracture patterns 2. Identify basic orthopaedic conditions should as inflamed or arthritic joints, tendinitis, strains and sprains, and infections as well as outline a basic treatment plan for these conditions. 3.Discuss the principles of orthopaedic surgical exposure and wound closure, and post-operative would care. 4.Define the basic principles for splint immobilization of injured extremities.
Types of Patients: Patient seen include ED admission, elective surgical patients, and outpatient visits seen at the Bone and Joint Center.
