We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisite: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course Description: This elective is designed to acquaint the student with the broad scope of neurosurgery. Students are exposed to a large volume of patients including neurosurgical emergencies, neurosurgical trauma, neurovascular and spinal emergencies, and elective neurosurgical problems. The student will participate with housestaff and attendings in decisions and plans for neurodiagnostic work-ups, medical and surgical management of neurosurgical patients including full participation in rounds or floorwork, conferences and exposure to the academic and scientific program of the Department of Neurosurgery. The elective is designed for those with specific interest in the care of patients who exhibit neurological disorders or for students with a special interest in the neurosciences.
Educational Objectives: The student will demonstrate the ability to: 1.Define the pre- operative and post-operative management of the neurosurgical patient; 2.Perform a competent neurological evaluation including relevant history and examination. 3.Define the basic approach to neurosurgical emergencies. 4.Expand understanding of clinical neuroanatomy and the pathophysiology of brain injury. 5. Define the fundamentals of x-ray and advanced (CT, MRI) imaging of the spine and head, including normal and common pathological entities. 6. Acquaint oneself with the breadth of neurosurgical problems from acute neurovascular and surgical emergencies, to pediatric and geriatric problems, and spinal surgery indications and procedures.
