We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: The Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery elective offers exposure to HPB surgery for the student interested in surgery, gastroenterology, or any other associated field. The HPB elective will focus on the management of complex HPB diseases. This elective is at St. Peter's Hospital. Students will be expected to attend office hours, tumor board, inpatient rounds, and scheduled operating room cases.
Educational Objectives: The student will demonstrate the ability to: 1. Identify and describe the benign and malignant diseases of the liver, pancreas, and bile ducts. 2. Describe the basic diagnostic approach and the surgical management of HPB diseases. 3. Perform a clinical history and physical exam and formulate differential diagnosis, diagnostic evaluation plan, and treatment plan for the major HPB diseases. 4. Apply diagnostic radiology interpretation skills. 5. Perform basic surgical skills and participate in the operating room.
