We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisites: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course Description: Vascular/Interventional Radiology is a relatively new and rapidly expanding field of medicine. This subsequently utilizes image-guided techniques to achieve therapeutic and diagnostic results. Areas of interest include: peripheral vascular disease, gynecologic, oncology, genitourinary, hepatobiliary, musculoskeletal and vascular access. This service is very active clinically with its own inpatient services, subspecialty clinic and consultative service. Many medical students find this rotation interesting because it bridges the imaging world with the clinical experience. The students will participate in actual procedures themselves as well as help with the evaluation and rounding on our patients. ***Available for 4 weeks only during periods 1-4***
Educational Objectives: The student will demonstrate the ability to: 1. Identify how an image-guided minimally invasive VIR section functions and describe how the modality fits into the functioning of medical and surgical services. 2. Define the pertinent role of the VIR sub-specialty in the integration of patient care and current medical practice. 3. Describe the basic concepts of transcatheter and other minimally-invasive diagnostic and interventional techniques. 4. Demonstrate basic ability in angiographic interpretative skills.
