We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Name: Inpatient Psychiatry

Course Description: Student will spend full days 8am - 5pm working with an interdisciplinary treatment team on the locked inpatient psychiatric unit at Albany Med. Student will conduct interviews, participate in treatment planning, observe Electroconvulsive Therapy when available, observe Mental Hygiene Law processes, write progress notes, and perform physical exams as a functioning member of the team.
Educational Objectives: 1. Refine psychiatric interviewing skills. 2. Describe psychiatric illness and factors contributing to acute decompensation of illness. 3. Define of acute psychiatric treatment modalities.
Types of Patients: Acutely decompensated psychiatric inpatients with a wide range of diagnoses, including psychotic disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders and others.
Teaching Sessions /Conferences: Grand Rounds- Wednesdays @ 11am 1st 2 weeks of month; Journal Club - Thursdays @ noon; Case Conference - Fridays @ noon.
