We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisite: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course Description: I. Clinical Work: (A) Follow hospitalized patients with a variety of renal disorders such as acute renal failure, hypertension, electrolyte abnormalities and glomerulonephritis. (B) Exposure to children on chronic dialysis, in the Albany Medical Center Pediatric Dialysis Unit. (C) Pediatric Nephrology clinic three times a week. II. Review of renal biopsies performed on patients with nephritic syndrome/glomerulonephritis. III. Possibilities for participation in research project/write case report. IV. Guided reading.
Educational Objectives: The student will demonstrate the ability to: 1. Interpret urinalysis and develop a differential based on the results in combination with a brief history. 2. Recognize and initiate the evaluation of a patient with acute renal injury. 3. Recognize hypertension in different age groups, its etiologies in childhood and be able to initiate a diagnostic evaluation. 4. Recognize basic characteristics and presentations of nephrotic syndromes, nephritic diseases, interstitial nephritis, glomerulonephritis, obstructive uropathy, and renal tubular acidosis. 5. Define the mechanisms of commonly used medications, appropriate uses and side effects. 6. Identify the different modes of dialysis including risks and benefits of each.
