We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisite: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course Description: Four weeks of clinical experience in pediatric hematology- oncology. Primarily focused in the pediatric hematology/oncology outpatient clinic but may be asked to participate in inpatient consultations. Will see a wide range of benign hematology as well as the full range of malignant pediatric hematology and oncology in patients from birth to late adolescence/young adult. Will participate in diagnostic and treatment planning as appropriate and will be expected to do full assessments of patients. Will also participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards and also psychosocial discussions on the management of these patients and their families. Instructors: Drs. Kanya Ayyanar, Maria Boucher, Lauren Weintraub, Jennifer Pearce, Jessica Geaney and Joanne Porter.
Educational Objectives: 1. Recognize and initiate the evaluation and treatment of anemia in newborn, toddler, school age and adolescent patients. 2. Identify complications of sickle cell anemia and the preventative care measures available to improve overall health and survival 3. Understand how to evaluate and treat children with bleeding/thrombotic disorders including platelet disorders. 4. Develop basic understanding of pathology of oncologic diseases and their presentations. 5. Recognize complications associated with different forms of chemotherapy. 6. Identify different blood products and signs to monitor for when administered.
Types of Patients: Birth to young adulthood with blood disorders and oncologic concerns.
Teaching Sessions /Conferences: Pediatric Grand Rounds Tuesday 8am; Pediatric Heme/Onc psychosocial/chemotherapy rounds Wednesday 2:30pm; and Pediatric tumor board on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 1pm.
