We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisite: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course Description: Students will spend 2 weeks rotating with Drs. Qualia and Allmendinger. They will be directly involved in the care of inpatients and outpatients with gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and nutritional disorders. Emphasis will be placed on improving history taking and physical examination skills. Students will be expected to develop differential diagnoses for the patients they see, and will learn how to take a directed approach to diagnosing intraabdominal disorders. They will have the ability to observe diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed by Drs. Qualia and Allmendinger. Patient-based learning will occur continuously throughout the day. If time allows, a few formal lectures will be given by Drs. Qualia and/or Allmendinger. Students are expected to read about the illnesses they see, and will be asked to present a 20 minute lecture on a topic of their choice.
Educational Objectives: The student will demonstrate the ability to: 1. Perform and improve their pediatric history taking and physical examination skills. 2. Formulate differential diagnoses for children with gastrointestinal symptoms. 3. Define which laboratory, radiologic, and endoscopic studies are available to help diagnose different gastrointestinal diseases seen in children, recognize how these studies are done, and understand how to interpret the results of these studies. 4. Identify and understand the indications for referring a child to a pediatric gastroenterologist.
Types of Patients: Students will have direct supervised care of a broad diversity of patients, mostly in the outpatient setting. They will also have opportunities to care for inpatients and view diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures.
