We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Department: Pathology
Course Number: PAT-4005
Course Name: Anatomic and Clinical PathologyMedicine
Instructors: Dr. M. Kristina Subik
Course Description: Prerequisite: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course Description: The objectives are to reinforce the students' knowledge of pathologic findings through gross and microscopic evaluation as well as by review of pertinent laboratory studies, while correlating with clinical history and events. During this elective, students are exposed to the diagnostic aspects of anatomic and clinical pathology and their subspecialties. Although students receive a broad exposure to pathology, we attempt to individualize the elective to accentuate the students' future professional pursuits. To further enhance the clinical- pathologic correlation, students will observe the gross dissection of surgical specimens and sit in when cases are signed out with the residents and attendings at the multi-headed microscope. Students may assist with autopsies, helping with the gross dissection. The students and the resident will then examine the microscopic slides before the attending signs out the case with them. Students will participate in daily didactics, tumor boards, case conferences, lab rounds, frozen section analyses, and microscopic sign outs with pathology attendings and residents. Students will also learn more about clinical pathology (i.e., laboratory medicine) and spend time in the clinical laboratories including transfusion medicine, hematology, microbiology, chemistry, and flow cytometry. Students will give at least one case-based presentation during their rotation.
Educational Objectives: The student will: 1. Gain a better understanding of the Pathologist's role in current anatomic pathology and laboratory medical practice. 2. Demonstrate and apply a more in depth knowledge of the diseases that affect pediatric and adult patients. 3. Demonstrate proficiency at making the most common diagnoses by both gross and microscopic examination. 4 Understand pertinent and common transfusion medicine topics, such as blood groups and major tests, such as Type and Screen.
Types of Patients: All patients that are biopsied, undergo surgery testing, or have laboratory testing performed.
Teaching Sessions /Conferences: Daily conferences in F110 conference room: Monday 8-9am and 12-1pm, Tuesday 8-9am, Thursday 8-9am and Friday 9-10am. Various tumor boards throughout the week (times vary). Other didactics and conferences as assigned.
