We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisites: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course Description: This elective offers definitive work in ocular disease as correlated with clinical entities. The student will have responsibilities commensurate with their abilities in the outpatient department and with inpatients. The goal of this course is to further the student's knowledge of ophthalmology and introduce the student to the field of clinical investigation of ophthalmology. The individual student's goals may be to further their knowledge of ophthalmology pursuant to entering other fields or entering the field of ophthalmology. The rotation exposes the student to the different subspecialties found within the field of Ophthalmology. All attempts will be made to honor a student's request for concentration in a particular subspecialty.
Educational Objectives: The student will: 1. Demonstrate familiarity with ophthalmic diagnostic techniques and identify common eye disorders, their ocular pathology, and treatment plans. 2. Demonstrate competency in performing the basic eye exam. 3. Identify and describe how to triage basic eye complaints. 4. Demonstrate proficiency using eye examination equipment.
Types of Patients: Students will examine patients at Albany Medical Center Eye Clinic, VAMC Eye Clinic, and the Lions Eye Institute. Participation in the operation room is a part of this elective.
Teaching Sessions /Conferences: Students interested in Ophthalmology as a career should make arrangements with the Course Director to give a clinical presentation at the monthly department case conference. They will be expected to attend all resident and departmental conferences as well as accompany resident on evening call.
