We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisite: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course Description: This elective is designed to provide students interested in learning more about pediatric neurology with an intensive exposure to both inpatient and outpatient aspects of the field. Students will work closely with Dr. Pugh in both clinical settings and occasionally with other providers. They will be responsible for independently seeing patients, obtaining histories, performing physical examinations, and completing relevant patient documentation. The spectrum of disease processes involved is provided under the objectives section. PLEASE NOTE: THIS ELECTIVE MAY BE ARRANGED ANY TIME DURING FOURTH YEAR BUT REQUIRES COORDINATION THROUGH DR. PUGH TO ENSURE THAT THERE ARE ADEQUATE LEARNING OPPORUNITIES FOR THE STUDENT WHICH ARE NOT AFFECTED BY OTHER ROTATORS.
Educational Objectives: By the end of this rotation students are expected to be able to: 1. Obtain a comprehensive neurologic history that addresses common conditions/chief complaints encountered by a child neurologist. 2. Perform a neurologic examination on children of varying ages from the neonatal period through toddlerhood, childhood and into adolescence. 3. Generate a differential diagnosis for children presenting for common neurologic conditions/complaints encountered by a child neurologist. 4. Provide an assessment and plan crafted to address common neurologist conditions/complaints. Common conditions/complaints include: seizures, non-epileptic paroxysmal events, movement disorders, headaches, developmental delay, cerebral palsy, hypotonia, and neuromuscular disorders.

Resources /Readings: Recommended - Fenichel's Clinical Pediatric Neurology, A Signs and Symptoms Approach. Dr. Pugh has a copy which can be loaned to the student during the rotation.
