We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisites: Students must have prior research experience, such as participation in Summer Research Fellowship, M.D. with Distinction in Research track (or other Distinction tracks), external research opportunity (e.g., Year Out for Research), a Scholarly Endeavors project, or permission of the Course Director. Successful completion of third year. Elective Description: This elective provides opportunities for students to work on new projects or to complete their ongoing research projects prior to completion of medical school. Students who need to finish their experimental work, or who need guidance in preparation of their thesis or public presentation, or who need to focus on writing a manuscript for publication, can benefit from this elective and the individualized nature of the instruction. The range of available scholarly training is quite broad and will be matched to the topics that are particularly important to the student. PLEASE NOTE: THIS COURSE QUALIFIES AS A NON-CLINICAL ELECTIVE. ADDITIONALLY, STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE THE ELECTIVE COURSE REQUIREMENTS IN THE SAME TIMEFRAME FOR WHICH THEY ARE OFFICIALLY REGISTERED FOR THE COURSE.
Educational Objectives: Upon completion of this elective, the student will document progress toward the course objectives through means including some (but not all) of these methods: 1. Prepare and present a formal seminar of their research project. 2. Write and defend a thesis based on their research project. 3. Demonstrate mastery of the research area through oral and written interactions with faculty. As individually arranged, students may: a. Demonstrate mastery of research skills while working in a laboratory, clinic, or field placements. b. Contribute to the preparation of a manuscript for submission to a professional journal.
