We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisites: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course Description: The goal for this elective is to promote self-reflection in relation to personal goals and aspirations as medical professionals by examining the intersection between medicine and literature. The elective entails independent work where students will select and read literary works (fiction and non- fiction) about the practice of medicine, physicians' and/or patients' perspectives, personal illness narratives, or health and illness in general. Students are expected to choose a theme or themes of special interest for critical analysis and discussion. Requirements: 1) Submission of a plan regarding selected theme(s) and readings to instructor prior to the elective; and 2) reading five to eight books, and 3) completion of an in-depth analysis of at least four books as a written assignment. PLEASE NOTE: THIS COURSE QUALIFIES AS A NON-CLINICAL ELECTIVE. ADDITIONALLY, STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE THE ELECTIVE COURSE REQUIREMENTS IN THE SAME TIMEFRAME FOR WHICH THEY ARE OFFICIALLY REGISTERED FOR THE COURSE.
