We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisites: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course Description: The goals of the elective are to provide the student with instruction and a broad experience in endocrinology. The student will participate in the outpatient and inpatient setting. The student will attend all teaching conferences and their focus will be on the history and physical examination skills particularly pertaining to endocrinology. The student will be assigned to a clinic or inpatient consult service and evaluate patients under supervision of a fellow in endocrinology or an attending physician. On the first day of the rotation, students will meet at 25 Hackett Blvd, on the 3rd floor of the South Clinical Campus. Report by 8am.
Educational Objectives: The student will demonstrate the ability to: 1. Perform a thorough and comprehensive physical exam. 2. Under appropriate supervision, identify and correctly treat diabetes mellitus, thyroid and adrenal disorders. 3. Correctly interpret thyroid studies, blood sugars, and adrenal studies. 4. Provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate and effective for the treatment of health problems. 5. Display a commitment to accountability, excellence in practice, adherence to ethical principles, humanism, altruism and sensitivity to diversity.
Types of Patients: Students will have direct supervised care of a broad diversity of patients in the outpatient setting.
Teaching Sessions /Conferences: All teaching conferences will be done on Tuesdays from 8:00am-9:00am and Thursdays from 8:00am-1:00pm. This will include fellows' case conference, journal club, medicine grand rounds and the pathology conference.
