We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisite: Successful completion of third year. Course Description: The goals of the elective are to provide the student with instruction and a broad experience in clinical cardiology. The student shall participate in daily patient rounds and teaching conferences with emphasis upon learning the skills of history, physical examination, electrocardiography, non-invasive testing and an introduction to cardiac catheterization. The student may spend the majority of the elective with the cardiology service on either the Coronary Care Unit or the inpatient/consultation service. The student should attend noon conferences Mondays through Thursdays, which include: echo/imaging conference, cardiac catheterization, ECG, journal club and module related sessions. Alternatively, the student may participate in the cardiology teaching program at the Veterans Administration Medical Center or in the outpatient cardiology clinic at Albany Medical Center. On the first day of the rotation, students should meeting in the Cardiology Conference Room 209 at 7:30am for sign-outs. They will be joining the CCU Team.
Educational Objectives: The student will demonstrate the ability to: 1. Perform a thorough and comprehensive cardiac exam including the ability to identify cardiac murmurs. 2. Under appropriate supervision, identify and correctly treat congestive heart failure. 3. Demonstrate the ability to interpret electrocardiograms including recognizing myocardial infarctions and conduction delays. 4. Provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate and effective for the treatment of health problems. 5. Demonstrate a commitment to accountability, excellence in practice, adherence to ethical principles, humanism, altruism, and sensitivity to diversity.
Types of Patients: Students will have direct supervised care of a broad diversity of patients in the inpatient and/or outpatient setting.
