We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisites: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course Description: Elective experience with the faculty and residents at the AMC Family Medicine site*. This rotation can be tailored to meet your individual interests to include the various ambulatory clinical activities of the department or preceptor site. If assigned to the AMC Family Medicine Center, optional experiences could include exposure to alcohol and substance abuse programs, adolescent medicine, home visits, practice management, sports physicals, and nutritional counseling. *Albany Medical College students have the option to do this elective away and a self-selected site. It must be coordinated with the registrar's office for approval before you start.
Educational Objectives: The student will demonstrate the ability to: 1. Define the value of the provision of primary care by family physicians to any health care system and identify the principles of family medicine care. 2. Assess patients, formulate a differential diagnosis, and propose initial evaluation and management for patients with common acute presentations. 3. Demonstrate the ability to independently manage a chronic illness follow up visit for patients with common chronic diseases. 4. Create an evidence-based health maintenance plan for a patient of any age and either gender. 5. Demonstrate competency in advanced history-taking, communication, physical examination, and critical thinking skills.
Types of Patients: Culturally and socioeconomically diverse patients.
