We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Resuscitation and Critical care is a discipline dedicated to the management of the critically ill patient in the emergency department setting. Student will work alongside Emergency Medicine, Division of Critical Care faculty and fellows in order to gain experience in the management of the hyperacute patient presenting to the ED through the duration of their hospital course. Students should expect 3 clinical shift experiences per week along with weekly dedicated didactic session.
Educational Objectives: . Gain exposure to the longitudinal management of critically ill patients beyond their initial resuscitation and disposition . Develop an understanding of the critical actions necessary to a successful resuscitation . Develop an understanding of the management of the critically ill patient in the first 24 hours after resuscitation . Develop a foundation for understanding ventilator management . Create an awareness of advanced airway techniques beyond rapid sequence intubation . Develop an awareness of how to incorporate evidence- based medicine into caring for the critically ill
Types of Patients: Students can expect to work closely with: A) The hyperacute, undifferentiated critically ill patient requiring active resuscitation B) The critically ill patient ED patient awaiting disposition Both of these examples will feature the highest acuity patients seen in the ED setting.
