We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: The practice of Pain Medicine includes the management of acute, chronic and cancer pain for adult and pediatric patients through various multidisciplinary means including medications, procedures, physical therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. The elective will focus on the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of patients with both acute and chronic pain, in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
Educational Objectives: The emphasis for education objectives will be on medical knowledge and patient care. These include: 1. Describe major and common pain diagnoses and their pathophysiology. 2. Classify major drugs prescribed to patients with chronic pain, e.g., NSAIDS, anti-depressants, anti-convulsants, opioids, local anesthetics, and muscle relaxants. 3. Distinguish indications for, potential complications of, and techniques for various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. 4. Identify relevant anatomy for each diagnostic/therapeutic procedure. 5. Use principles and skills involved in the management of chronic pain. 6. Perform a targeted history and physical examination for patients with acute and chronic pain. 7. Develop a safe treatment plan for a patient based on the available objective and subjective medical data. 8. Observe common pain procedures, including neuraxial and peripheral injections, under fluoroscopic and/or ultrasound guidance.
Types of Patients: For outpatient pain management, patients will be seen in the outpatient clinic setting at the Spine Center at 391 Myrtle Ave, Suite 1B. Adult and pediatric patients with common pain syndromes, including low back pain and neck pain, as well as less common pain syndromes are seen. Interventional pain procedures will be done at the South Clinical Campus. For the inpatient setting, there is both the Acute Pain Service and the Enhanced Recovery after Surgery service at Albany Medical Center. Patients are pre-rounded on in the morning, with attending rounds in the late morning/afternoon.
