Nurse Anesthesiology Admissions

To apply for admission to the Albany Medical College CRNA program, applicants should demonstrate the following admissions criteria:

• Graduate of an accredited registered nursing (RN) program.
• Verification of initial and current licensure as an RN in the U.S.
• Baccalaureate degree in nursing or appropriate science degree, with an undergraduate GPA of 3.2 or above.
• Experience as an RN in a critical care area for at least two years (within the past five years) in the U.S.
  • A critical care area is defined as a high acuity ICU in which the RN manages, daily, invasive hemodynamic monitors (CVP, arterial, & Swan Ganz/TLC catheters), ventilators, and vasoactive drips (neosynephrine, levophed, epinephrine, dobutamine, nicardipine, and nitroglycerine)
• Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) Certification
• Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification.
• Undergraduate Research Methods course with a grade of B or greater.
  • Research methods must describe models for the appropriate collection and analysis of unbiased data for decision-making, replication, and contribution to the greater scientific knowledge base. The course must include quantitative and qualitative research methods, validity & reliability of measures, and research ethics.
• Undergraduate Organic Chemistry I course (lab not required) with a grade of B or greater
• Completion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) within the past five years.
  • Scores should be equal to or greater than 150 in the verbal and quantitative sections, and 3.5 in the analytical section.
  • The Albany Medical College Institution Code is 2947 & the “at home” version is not approved.
• English Proficiency Exam score (TOEFL or IELTS)
  • If English is not your first language and you have not attained a degree from a U.S. college or university, you should have a TOEFL / IELTS score that reflects a good ability to read and write English.
  • The Albany Medical College Institution Code is 2947.
• Shadow a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in an operating room setting within the past 5 years.

Please note, requirements are subject to change following the criteria set forth by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs and Albany Medical College. Meeting the recommended prerequisites does not ensure an interview or acceptance into the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) for the Nurse Anesthesiology program.

In order to apply to the Center for Nurse Anesthesiology prospective students must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents (hold a green card). International applicants should have a TOEFL / IELTS score that reflects a good ability to read and write English. You will need official transcripts from all undergraduate/graduate school(s), a $60 application fee (waivable), and documentation of financial support to live in the United States. You must also complete the International Applicant Supplemental form.

• Secure three (3) individuals willing to write a letter of recommendation.
  • We recommend one from a current nurse manager, one from a current supervisor/charge nurse, and one from a recent undergraduate professor.
• Apply online for our Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Degree program.
• Submit a Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Information on your education, relevant employment, nursing experience, experience with relevant techniques, honors and awards, and leadership experience
• Submit two 500-word statements.
  • Reasons for wanting to be a CRNA and your career goals
  • Research interests while obtaining your DNP
• Pay a non-refundable application fee of $100.

The nurse anesthesiology program office will contact you once they receive all required application documentation. After assessing your completed application, we will notify you if you are eligible for an interview. Please note that fulfilling the recommended prerequisites does not guarantee an interview or acceptance into the nurse anesthesiology program.

The Center for Nurse Anesthesiology has a rolling admission deadline. This means that we accept applications year-round. Admission is competitive, so we recommend applying as early as possible.
