S.M. Touhidul Islam, PhD
Dr. Islam is the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory Director for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Albany Medical Center. He is a certified clinical chemist and member of the Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine, and an assistant professor at Albany Medical College.
He graduated from the doctoral program and subsequently accomplished a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina. He then graduated from the Clinical Chemistry Fellowship Program at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
Dr. Islam is active in research and education of clinical chemistry, toxicology, and immunology. He investigated the reciprocal communication between parathyroid hormone and vitamin D. He studied the utility of a definitive urine-drug testing with and without glucoronide hydrolysis in an urgent care setting. He conducted research to reveal the immunomodulatory function of S-nitrosoglutathione, an endogenous nitric oxide carrier, to ameliorate autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis.
He also worked on the development of some novel fusion proteins consisting of a cytokine and a neuro-antigen which are assumed to act as tolerogenic-therapeutic vaccine to restore tolerance in multiple sclerosis. He published a sizable number of articles in peer reviewed journals and presented his works at different professional and academic meetings and conferences.
Dr. Islam is board certified in clinical chemistry by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (2024), the National Registry of Certified Chemists (2023), and the American Society for Clinical Pathology (2023). He earned a Master of Science degree in 2012 from East Carolina University and in 2008 from the University of Dhaka in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The University of Dhaka is also where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 2006.
