Our Neuroendovascular Surgery Fellowship Program Fellowship is a one- or two-year training program focused on the management of vascular disorders seen in both adult and pediatric populations and is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Subspeciality Training (CAST) of the Society of Neurological Surgeons, and aims to train the next generation of physicians on neurovascular pathology. The fellowship provides exposure to every aspect of neurointerventional procedures including the treatment of stroke, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, carotid stenosis and more. This fellowship follows a focused rotation of typically one year whereby the fellow has already obtained expertise in performing and interpreting diagnostic angiography and diagnostic neuroradiology.
The Albany Medical Center Neuroendovascular group has been a high-volume center for more than a decade and has remained the sole tertiary neurovascular center for upstate New York with a radius of approximately 150 miles. In these 12 months, it is anticipated the fellow will perform more than 100 diagnostic angiograms, embolization of more than 50 unruptured aneurysms and 20 ruptured aneurysms, placement of 25 arterial stents (intra and extracranial stent placement with at least five in each category), 150 mechanical thrombectomies and embolization of 25 other types of vascular pathology such as AVM, AVF, or tumors. All of these cases will occur at Albany Medical Center under the supervision of five fellowship trained endovascular neurosurgeons and one interventional neurologist. In addition, the endovascular fellow will play a pivotal role in participating in the many trials for which Albany Medical Center is currently enrolling patients including STRIDE, ARTISSE, PICASSO, and WEB PAS.
The endovascular fellow will attend clinic one day a week where they participate in patient selection, preoperative patient evaluation and postoperative patient management. In addition, the fellow will be responsible for running the weekly multidisciplinary Neuroendovascular Conference which involves journal review, morbidity and mortality presentations, anatomy didactics and case presentations.
