We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisite: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course Description: This elective provides a concentrated exposure to the broad field of Otolaryngology. Under close supervision, the student assumes an active role in the care of both inpatients and outpatients at Albany Medical Center and VA Hospitals. Considerable emphasis is placed on otolaryngologic procedures by being assigned to the operating rooms, both as observer and assistant. Participation is encouraged in all departmental activities such as conferences, journal clubs, hospital rounds, and clinical and basic science lectures. The student will give a scholarly presentation to the department at the end of the rotation.
Educational Objectives: The student will demonstrate the ability to: 1. Perform history and physical examinations. 2. Generate a differential diagnosis to guide diagnostic and therapeutic plans. 3. Conduct daily rounds and construct and deliver organized and succinct presentations on assigned patients. Write appropriate daily follow-up notes for assigned patients. 4. Interpret and explain laboratory and imaging results. 5. Perform basic surgical skills: assisting in surgery, suturing, wound management, and appropriate use of surgical instruments. 6. Exhibit professional and respectful interactions with member of the clinical team, consultants, and support staff. 7. Demonstrate ability to work in a team. 8. Communicate with and educate patients and visitors with consideration of cultural, age, and other socioeconomic factors.
