We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Description: Prerequisite: Successful completion of 3rd year. Course Description: Pediatric rheumatology elective will expose the student to the pediatric rheumatology subspecialty. The student will be encouraged to learn about the pathophysiology, and diagnostic criteria used in pediatric rheumatologic disease. The student will learn through direct patient observation and care, thus learning clinical features and physical exam, with particular emphasis in the musculoskeletal exam. We will review clinical signs and symptoms of disease and laboratory indications and interpretation. We will also discuss treatment options available for children, benefits and side effects of these medications, including intra-articular steroids. Lastly, the student will learn the importance of physical rehabilitation and understand the psychosocial impact of chronic rheumatologic disease in children. Students will be exposed to pediatric rheumatology conditions distinct from adult rheumatology, such as JIA, auto-inflammatory conditions, Dermatomyositis, and Lupus among others.
Educational Objectives: The student will demonstrate the ability to: 1. Understand unique aspects of childhood rheumatologic disease compared to adult rheumatologic disease. 2. Be able to recognize different rheumatologic illness in childhood and understand laboratory diagnosis and management of these disorders. 3. Get proficient at musculoskeletal exam.
Types of Patients: Patient population seen in our clinic range from age 0 to 21. Students will be able to see patients with different childhood conditions such as JIA, Pain syndromes, Dermatomyositis, Juvenile Lupus, etc. It is mostly outpatient clinic setting with occasional inpatient consult.
Teaching Sessions /Conferences: Grand Rounds - Tuesdays at 8am. Ambulatory clinic conference, Mondays, at end of clinic. Weekly discussion in topics of pediatric rheumatology.
