We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Name: Pediatric/Adult Palliative Care

Course Description: Introduction to the concepts of palliative care for students interested in pediatric medicine. Using case review, consultation, outpatient visit, reading materials, weekly meeting and daily huddle, we will review the role that the palliative care team plays in the care of seriously ill children in the Children's Hospital. We will explore the role that hospice plays as well as other community service groups in the care of the sick individual. The student will be expected to round every morning with Dr. Porter and the Palliative Care Team. Selected readings will be provided.
Educational Objectives: At the end of the rotation the student will be able to: Plan and implement Comfort Care/End of Life Care/ Pain and Symptom Management techniques, Describe the role of the palliative care team in the care of the sick Neonate, Communicate effectively, including "The Difficult Talk" and The Family Meeting, Define Advanced Care Plans v. Advanced Directives, Describe the effect of serious illness on the caregiver and provide appropriate supports, Integrate palliative care into everyday practice, Describe Spiritual care and the role it plays in the care of the sick child.
