Carl Touhey Looks to the Future at Albany Med with $1 Million Gift
ALBANY, NY, May 29, 2012—Well-regarded philanthropist Carl Touhey has made a gift of $1 million to support the construction of the new Patient Pavilion at Albany Medical Center. The facility, expected to be completed next year, will expand Albany Med’s bed capacity, and provide state-of-the-art operating and recovery rooms as well as enhanced intensive care units.
“Through this generous gift to the Patient Pavilion, Carl, once again, leads us into the future,” said Albany Med President and CEO James J. Barba. “His focus and enthusiasm for this project is helping us expand our unparalleled health care services to meet the growing needs of our region.”
In addition to supporting the facility, Touhey says he hopes his gift will motivate others who share his vision. “I want to encourage tomorrow’s donors,” he said. “Albany Med will need their leadership in the future to remain our region’s unique world-class health care provider. I hope they will join us in this important project.”
This gift is the most recent for one of Albany Med’s most generous donors. Touhey, a member of the Albany Medical Center board of directors, has previously chaired two major fundraising campaigns for the Medical Center. In recognition of his philanthropy, “The Charles and Winifred Touhey Emergency Care Center” is named to honor his late parents. Also, for his tireless efforts on behalf of the hospital, he was named a “Pillar” of Albany Med in 2011, a recognition bestowed upon benefactors whose gifts have a significant impact on patient care, medical careers, and biomedical research.
The Patient Pavilion is connected to the current hospital and will be adjoined to a recently-completed 1,500-space parking garage by a pedestrian foot bridge. When the project opens in 2013, it will include:
• 20 additional operating room suites
• 60 medical/surgical beds
• 56 neonatal intensive care unit beds
• 30 adult intensive care unit beds
The $360 million project is surrounded by four other new office buildings erected in the past few years by private developers that include office, educational and medical space for Albany Med and administrative offices for the Albany Stratton VA Hospital, as well as retail space for several businesses that have moved into the area.
Gilbane Inc. is overseeing the construction of the Patient Pavilion and TRO Jung Brannen Inc. is the architect for the project.
