Specimen Collection: Place specimen in sterile screw capped tube or collection cup. For urine, first morning void. Inoculate blood (5 mLs) or bone marrow into BacT/Alert MB bottle, provided by lab at 2-3511. Alert lab if sending a gastric wash. Swab specimens are highly discouraged. 
Minimum Volume: 3-5 mL 
Handling Instructions for Offsite Areas: Refrigerate. 
Reference Values: Negative Smears for acid fast bacilli are routinely performed on all specimens except urine, blood, bone marrow and bone. For M. tuberculosis, susceptibility testing is referred to NYSDOH.
