parasitology detection and identification
Synonyms: O & P Giardia; O and P Giardia; Ova & Parasite

Specimen Collection: Stool collected in a clean container with a secure lid. Swabs or stools collected after barium enema are unsatisfactory. >1 mL liquid stool, >1 gm soft/diarrheal stool. Exams will not be performed on stools submitted after 3 days of hospitalization unless prior arrangements are made between physician and lab based on clinical need. For pinworms, see Pinworm Prep. See also Cryptosporidium antigen, Giardia antigen, Cyclospora/Isospora smear. Cyclospora, Isopora and Microsporidium must be requested separately. 
Minimum Volume: > 1 mL > 1 gm 
Handling Instructions for Offsite Areas: Place sample in O&P transport (available through supply order form). Maintain at room temperature. 
Reference Values: No ova or parasites observed.
