Lifeline Campaign

Lifeline: The Campaign for Albany Medical Center

Albany Medical Center, truly an institution built by the community, has grown to serve as the “Lifeline” for our region.

In 1830 Alden March, MD, the Albany Medical College’s founder and its first dean, delivered an address “on the expediency of establishing a medical college and hospital in the City of Albany,” and within the decade, his vision was realized.

Patient-centered care is at the core of Albany Med's mission.
But that vision has come at a cost – one that increases almost daily as quality patient care, medical education and scientific research have become more complex and regulations more and more demanding.

Our community understands the value and importance of Albany Med, and has shown its support for our missions time and time again through philanthropy.

Beginning with Albany Medical College, which throughout its history, has distinguished itself as the educator of physicians who choose to practice both here in northeastern New York and across the country; many of its students are non-traditional, and

thousands are helped with scholarships.

The faculty physicians employed by the college today represent the largest physician practice in the region. They practice at Albany Medical Center Hospital, our region’s largest hospital, as well as in community locations throughout our 25-county service area. These physicians provide access to care for many area residents who rely on public insurance programs not accepted in doctors’ offices because of lower reimbursement rates and high regulatory demands.

Albany Medical Center views access to state-of-the-art patient care of the highest quality as a core mission. When reimbursement is inadequate to cover costs of care or to provide the extras, like toys for children fighting illness, the community helps – consistently and generously.
Researchers at Albany Med are constantly searching for new and innovative ways to treat diseases and care for our patients.
Philanthropic support also is provided by patients expressing gratitude for their care or supporting disease-specific research. Albany Medical College alumni are another wonderful source of support, eager to give today’s students the benefits of the education they received.

Several years ago we launched “Lifeline: A Campaign for Albany Medical Center.” During the capital campaign’s early phases, our stakeholders, including community and business leaders, corporations, foundations and alumni, committed $106.8 million, including a gift of $15.5 million, the largest in Albany Med’s more than 170-year history. Now as the Lifeline campaign enters its public phase and more people hear the message about the need to help support Albany Med and its important work, the positive response is expected to reach its goal of $125 million.
