New Medical Students Receive White Coats in Traditional Ceremony

ALBANY, N.Y., August 7, 2012—140 new medical students entering Albany Medical College donned their white coats for the first time today during the college’s “White Coat Ceremony.” As part of the time-honored tradition that marks the students’ entry into medical school, the students also recited the Hippocratic Oath.

Drawn from more than 9,000 applicants, this year’s students come from 23 states, including 48 students from New York, and eight from the Capital Region. This year’s class ranges in age from 20 to 38 and is almost equally divided between women and men.

Thirty-two of the new students graduated from one of Albany Medical College’s joint degree programs at Siena College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Union College. Twenty-nine students hold master’s degrees, and two have doctoral degrees. Nine students hold undergraduate degrees from prestigious Ivy League institutions including Cornell, Brown, and Princeton Universities.

“The donning of the traditional white coat symbolizes students’ entrance into the medical profession and the ethical and moral obligations that they are expected to uphold for their patients,” said Henry Pohl, M.D., vice dean for academic administration at Albany Medical College. “It’s an exciting day not only for our incoming students, but also for all of us at Albany Medical College as we welcome the next generation of physicians.”

Albany Medical Center, northeastern New York’s only academic health sciences center, is one of the largest private employers in the Capital Region. It incorporates the 651-bed Albany Medical Center Hospital, which offers the widest range of medical and surgical services in the region, and the Albany Medical College, which trains the next generation of doctors, scientists and other healthcare professionals, and also includes a biomedical research enterprise and the region’s largest physicians practice with 350 doctors. Albany Medical Center works with dozens of community partners to improve the region’s health and quality of life. For more information: www.amc.edu or www.facebook.com/albanymedicalcenter.
