Albany Med Honored by American Heart Association
ALBANY, N.Y., July 15, 2013 — Albany Medical Center recently became the only medical facility in the Capital Region recognized in three categories in for its success in providing quality care for heart disease and stroke patients by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.
The Medical Center most recently received the Silver Award for Resuscitation, the only hospital so honored in the Capital Region. It has previously been recognized with awards for excellence in heart failure and stroke care.
“We strive for consistent, sustained clinical excellence,” said Edward Philbin, M.D., Albany Med’s chief of Cardiology. “These awards are an indication of our devotion to that mission.”
Hospitals are honored under the heart and stroke associations’ Get With The Guidelines program, which focuses on promoting consistent adherence to the latest scientific treatment guidelines, sometimes called “evidence-based” medicine. The Get With The Guidelines-Resuscitation program aims to help hospital teams save more lives threatened by cardiopulmonary emergencies by consistently following the most up-to-date guidelines for treating patients who suffer a cardiac arrest in the hospital.
More than 18,800 in-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year, according to the American Heart Association.
Only five hospitals in New York state are recognized in all three of the Get With The Guidelines categories. And Albany Med’s Gold Plus ranking in Heart Failure and Stroke, and Silver in Resuscitation, is cumulatively higher than any facility in the state.
Under the Get With The Guidelines program, Gold Plus hospitals have followed treatment guidelines in certain key measures at least 85 percent of the time, in addition to 75 percent compliance with a module-specific quality measures, for at least 12 consecutive months. Silver Performance Award hospitals have maintained certain performance levels for at least 12 consecutive months.
