Melodies Center Observes Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September
September 6, 2013 - Albany , NY
ALBANY, N.Y., Sept. 6, 2013 - Albany Medical Center, the only facility in the region to treat cancer and blood disorders in children and teens, will be working to focus the public's attention on a leading cause of death among children during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September.
Albany Med's Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders will join with the Capital Region Childhood Cancer Coalition to support fund-raising initiatives, research and other programs for children and their families throughout the month.
Melodies Center physicians, nurses and staff are trained to treat a wide variety of childhood cancers. In addition to developing treatment plans, they help children and parents understand the stresses of managing a diagnosis.
"Without proper treatment and support, childhood cancer can have a devastating and long-term impact on children and their families," said Vikramjit Kanwar, M.D., director of the Melodies Center. "While advances in treatment have improved the outcomes for children dramatically, raising awareness at a regional and state level and supporting collaborative research are crucial to helping improve survival rates and getting children the care they need."
The Melodies Center is currently involved in more than 40 national research projects in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute (NCI)-sponsored Children's Oncology Group (COG), in addition to a study sponsored by Hyundai Hope on Wheels led by Alexander Gozman, M.D., director of the Melodies Center Late Effects Program.
