Region’s First-Ever Team Sarcoma 5K Off with Overwhelming Support
July 13, 2014 - Albany , NY
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y., July 12, 2014 ‹ More than 250 runners and walkers laced up their sneakers and made history in Saratoga Springs this morning, participating in the region's first-ever race to fight Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.
The Team Sarcoma 5K kicked off at 9 a.m. It's the first time a 5K solely dedicated to raising awareness and funds for sarcoma research has been held in the Capital Region. Albany Med orthopaedic oncologist Matthew DiCaprio, M.D., the only surgeon in the area who specializes in caring for patients with sarcoma, helped organize the event.
"Sarcomas make up only one percent of all cancers diagnosed in the United States, that's how rare they are," said Dr. DiCaprio. "Many health care providers have never seen or diagnosed sarcoma before which often results in a delayed diagnosis. That's why it's important to hold events like this that educate and involve the general public."
Close to 12,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with sarcoma every year. It is a form of cancer that develops in bone or soft tissue in both men and women equally. Treatment is lengthy and requires a combination of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy depending on the diagnosis and regions of the body involved. Most patients can be treated with a limb preserving surgery.
All proceeds from today's event will directly benefit the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative, an organization aimed at increasing public awareness of sarcoma, raising funds to award research grants and providing support and information to sarcoma patients, their families and medical professionals.
Sponsors of the inaugural Team Sarcoma 5K include: Capital Region Orthopaedics, Price Chopper, Stryker Orthopedics, Streetwear Inc., SUNY Albany Athletics, Kenneth March, D.P.M., Kenny Mayne, Byrne Orthodontics, Marcia Moor, Adirondack Trust Company, Gayle Buckley, Mary Karen Vellines, Putnam Market Inc., Donna And Peter Moran, Rohan Realty and Peter and Trish VanDerhoof.
