Dr. Mara McErlean to Direct College's Simulation Center

June 24, 2013 - Albany , NY

ALBANY, N.Y., June 24, 2013 - Mara McErlean, M.D., has been named director of the Patient Safety and Clinical Competency Center (PSCCC) at Albany Medical College, one of the largest and most sophisticated simulation facilities in the nation.

The PSCCC educates students and health care professionals in a realistic, yet safe, setting. It incorporates lifelike computerized mannequins and other virtual technologies, simulated hospital settings such as operating rooms and intensive care units, as well as trained actors, to portray real medical conditions for medical training.

Dr. McErlean hopes to integrate simulation and standardized patient training in all disciplines throughout the hospital and more community organizations. "Through the Patient Safety Center, Albany Med is in the unique position to improve quality and patient safety and ensure medical competence throughout this entire region," she said.

Dr. McErlean is a former chair of emergency medicine at Albany Medical Center. A graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in Minneapolis, she completed an internship in internal medicine at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis and her residency in emergency medicine at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Albany Medical Center, northeastern New York's only academic health sciences center, is one of the largest private employers in the Capital Region. It incorporates the 651-bed Albany Medical Center Hospital, which offers the widest range of medical and surgical services in the region, and the Albany Medical College, which trains the next generation of doctors, scientists and other healthcare professionals, and also includes a biomedical research enterprise and the region's largest physicians practice with nearly 400 doctors. Albany Medical Center works with dozens of community partners to improve the region's health and quality of life. For more information: www.amc.edu or www.facebook.com/albanymedicalcenter.
