May 14, 2014 - Albany , NY

ALBANY, N.Y., May 14, 2014-For the seventh consecutive year, Albany Medical Center's Epilepsy and Human Brain Mapping Program has been recognized for providing the most advanced diagnostic and treatment options for patients with complex epilepsy by the prestigious National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC).

Albany Med received a Level 4 rating, the highest level of distinction, along with other nationally recognized leaders including the Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins, and NYU Medical Center.  The NAEC cited Albany Med's medical and surgical care for excellence.

"This achievement is a testament to the expertise and dedication of our highly-specialized team," said Michael Gruenthal, M.D., Ph.D., chair of neurology at Albany Medical Center. "Level 4 designation means we are fully committed to provide the highest level of care in order to improve the lives of our patients living with epilepsy."

Earlier this year, Albany Med announced that four of its epilepsy specialists are the only board certified epileptologists in the Capital Region, joining only nine other New York physicians outside the greater New York City metropolitan area in being certified.

Part of the Neurosciences Institute, Albany Med's Epilepsy and Human Brain Mapping Program evaluates more than 350 patients each year in its inpatient epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU). The EMU offers the most technologically sophisticated monitoring experience available, including wireless brainwave recording. Brain mapping techniques are used to locate areas of the brain important for language, memory and movement to safely guide surgical tissue removal in order to stop the seizures.
