Albany Med Physician Chosen to Lead National Surgical Organizations

ALBANY, N.Y., Feb. 27, 2014 - Steven Stain, M.D., Henry and Sally Schaffer Chair of the Department of Surgery at Albany Medical Center, was recently elected to chair the governing committee that accredits surgical residency programs in the United States.
Nationally recognized as a surgeon, researcher and educator, Dr. Stain was elected to serve as chair of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Resident Review Committee for Surgery. In recent months, he also was elected to serve as president of the Western Surgical Association, president of the Society of Surgical Chairs, and as a governor of the American College of Surgeons.
In these positions, he works with top surgeons and medical educators throughout the country to set national standards for patient care and medical education for practicing surgeons and surgical residents.

"Serving these organizations also allows me to share the great work we do at Albany Med at the national level in ways that help us attract some of the best residents, students and faculty in the country."

Dr. Stain noted he is gratified to encounter Albany Med alumni or former residents who have risen to prestigious positions elsewhere. A member of the Albany Med faculty since 2005, he is a member of numerous professional organizations at the local, state and national levels, including serving on the executive council of the American Surgical Association - the oldest surgical association in the country.
