Cheryl Clow, RN, Named 2013 Employee of the Year

February 3, 2014 - Albany , NY

ALBANY, N.Y., Feb. 3, 2014 - Cheryl Clow, R.N. - described as "a hero in brightly colored scrubs" - has been named Albany Medical Center's 2013 Employee of the Year for her exceptional dedication and service to her patients and to Albany Med.

"What Cheryl does to support her patients, their families, and our community every day is truly inspiring," President and CEO James J. Barba said. "Cheryl is an extraordinary asset to our institution and embodies what we are all about here at Albany Medical Center."

A 23-year Albany Med employee, Clow works with patients who have complex genetic conditions as the metabolic clinical care coordinator for the Division of Genetics and Metabolism in the Department of Pediatrics. She also facilitates diagnostic testing and follow-up care for babies with very rare diseases as the regional coordinator for the New York State Department of Health's Newborn Screening Program.

"The beauty of working in genetics is that I get to see the whole picture, follow patients as they grow, and become a part of their families," Clow said. "I get asked not only to give patients care, but also to attend kindergarten graduations, high school graduations and weddings."

Colleagues who nominated Clow for the honor praised her knowledge and experience.

"I work with a great group of people," Clow said. "If you don't have that support, you can't do your job, and I am very humbled."

"I could not think of another person more deserving of this award," one young patient said. "Cheryl has a heart of gold."
