Epilepsy Specialists Among First in Nation Board Certified in Epilepsy
January 14, 2014 - Albany , NY
ALBANY, N.Y., Jan. 14, 2014 - Four Albany Medical Center epilepsy specialists are among the first in the nation to receive board certification in epilepsy by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, signifying exceptional proficiency in the field. They are the only board certified epileptologists in the Capital Region, and join only nine other New York physicians outside the greater New York City metropolitan area in being certified.
"Nearly 3 million Americans live with epilepsy, yet many do not receive proper treatment because they are not seen by specialists who are experts in this complex disease," said Michael Gruenthal, M.D., Ph.D., chair of neurology and one of those certified. "Board certification in epilepsy affirms that Albany Med is able to provide patients with the most advanced diagnostic and treatment options, leading to significant improvements in quality of life for epilepsy patients."
Other Albany Med neurologists who are board certified in epilepsy include Anthony Ritaccio, '84, M.D.; Timothy Lynch, M.D.; and Marjorie Bunch, M.D.
To receive subspecialty certification in epilepsy, neurologists must have specialized training and must demonstrate knowledge at a level that is significantly beyond the training and knowledge received by a general neurologist regarding the pathophysiology, genetics, pathology, diagnosis and treatment of seizure disorders.
Albany Med's Epilepsy and Human Brain Mapping Program is the only Level 4 Center in the region, the highest designation offered by the prestigious National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC). Level 4 centers have the most advanced medical and surgical diagnostic treatment options for patients with complex epilepsy.
