Psychiatry Residency

A four-year training program to help residents develop the knowledge, skill, and professionalism necessary for the competent, empathetic, and independent practice of general psychiatry.

About the Program

Albany Medical Center offers a four-year training program in general psychiatry, accredited by ACGME, with a complement of 28 residents. Our goal is to assure that each resident develops the knowledge, skill, and professional behavior necessary for the competent, empathetic, and independent practice of general psychiatry. This goal is achieved through a combination of broad clinical experience, a comprehensive didactic program, scholarly research opportunities, and a close relationship with dedicated faculty. The psychiatry faculty at Albany Medical Center is committed the support of the professional development of every resident.

The importance of the doctor-patient relationship is emphasized throughout residency and we provide extensive training and supervision in psychotherapy, as the foundation for psychiatric practice.

Residents admitted each year are integrated into the department and participate with faculty in developing their own areas of expertise across four years of intensive training in psychiatry.

Julia Ringel, DO quote
I am glad to have chosen this program because it offers such a wide range of experiences in different settings and with different patient populations. We work at Albany Medical Center, at the VA, at the state psychiatric center with long-term inpatients, and we have a dedicated psych ER.”
