Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency

Fully accredited by the ACGME, our four-year Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program gives residents the knowledge and skills to become practicing OBGYNs or to continue their training through fellowships.

Comprehensive Curriculum, Varied Teaching Formats

During each of their four years in our ACGME-accredited Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program, our 24 residents have weekly protected educational time, with opportunities to participate in simulations, case-based learning, OSCEs, cadaver surgery, and traditional didactics from Albany Medical Center faculty, community health care providers, and other national health care leaders.

The two-year educational cycle follows objectives set by the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG), covering topics in basic obstetrics and gynecology, office practice, peri-operative care, high-risk obstetrical care, female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, gynecologic oncology, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. A wellness series focusing on resident wellness, which can be carried into their lives as physicians, and a standardized research educational program designed to foster mentorship and encourage departmental resident-driven scholarly activity, are also part of the rotating curriculum.

By far, the residents’ favorite teaching days are those that include simulations. Residents practice first- and second-degree perineal repair on bananas and third- and fourth-degree laceration repairs on beef tongues, use dolls to practice forceps-assisted vaginal deliveries and box trainers to sharpen their FLS skills, brush up on their surgical skills using the DaVinci robot, do hysteroscopy on green peppers, and so much more. On a cadaver day they learn complex pelvic anatomy and hone advanced surgical skills with porcine surgery.

Designed to meet the needs of different learning styles, our program gives residents the knowledge and skills required to become successful OBGYNs.

I love this residency program because of my co-residents. They are the most supportive, compassionate, and dedicated group of people. Through these very challenging and uncertain times in the world, I have watched my co-residents band together to help each other in times of need and become strong patient advocates. I am thrilled to get to grow, learn, laugh and cry with this amazing group of humans.”
