Anesthesiology Residency

Fully accredited by the ACGME, our categorical residency program offers broad experience in all aspects of anesthesiology, preparing residents to be compassionate, competent anesthesiologists in private or academic practices.

About the Program

Welcome to Anesthesiology at Albany Medical College. Our service provides the highest quality care across the perioperative continuum, including preoperative evaluation and testing, anesthetic care in our adult and pediatric operating rooms, procedural areas, and obstetric suites, acute and chronic pain management, and critical care. Clinical services are provided throughout Albany Medical Center, as well as in our ambulatory surgery locations, South Clinical Campus and the Center for Advanced Ambulatory Surgery.

Our providers are board certified or eligible, and many have obtained subspecialty training in cardiac, obstetric, and pediatric anesthesia, pain management, and critical care. They work alongside an outstanding group of certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), many of whom trained right here in Albany Medical College’s graduate program, as well as our excellent anesthesiology residents.

Top 10 Reasons to Do Your Residency With Us!

1. Only one site for all your required anesthesiology rotations.

3. Albany Medical Center has the only dedicated pediatric emergency department, pediatric intensive care unit, and Level 4 neonatal intensive care unit for a 26-county area, all part of the region’s only children’s hospital, located on-site. 8. Call is approximately 1:6, extra pay for staying late and “moonlighting shifts.”

9. More than 60 CRNAs, which helps with relieving for lecture/conferences/end of day/call and allows assignment of cases uniquely dedicated to each resident’s current academic needs.

10. Curricular highlights include: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery, research week, transthoracic echo, systems-based practice week (created based on input from our residents), all of which provide multiple opportunities to get to know and interact with our department during your intern year so you feel like a member of the family right from the start of training.

For me, coming to Albany Medical Center was also coming home. Having grown up in this city, volunteered here, and worked as an anesthesia technician during my gap year. I know firsthand the variety and complexity of cases that residents get to experience here, with some autonomy at every level.”

Albany Medical College was an easy choice for me. It is a smaller sized program with great camaraderie within the entire department. As a major Level 1 Trauma Center for a large area of upstate New York, it also provides excellent clinical/academic training, with a wide variety of unique cases and patient populations.”

I was drawn to this program for many reasons despite being so far from family. Most importantly, the faculty are really engaging and care about our education and wellbeing. We have almost no fellows to compete for cases which means residents get to do the big cases and we have no problems meeting any of our case requirements.”

I couldn’t be happier to have the opportunity to complete residency at Albany Medical College. Small class sizes allow for an individualized education within a large center that serves a broad patient population. The program is a tight-knit community where everyone, from fellow residents to attendings, wants to help you learn and succeed. It is a truly welcoming and positive environment.”
