Spinal Cord Injury

The rehabilitation unit at Albany Med was designed to serve patients with spinal cord injuries and allow patients to be seen by the trauma surgeons and spine surgeons who have cared for the patient since the time of injury. The surgeons work closely with the rehabilitation team to provide the best recuperation plan for patients.

At Albany Med, the team consists of physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, speech therapists, clinical psychologists, and case managers with extensive experience in the care of patients with spinal cord injury. Daily communication between doctors, nurses and therapists occurs in the unit, in addition to communication between the rehabilitation team, the patient, and the patient’s family. Patients in the unit have access to all of the resources of Albany Med, such as physician expertise and technology, resulting in the best possible recovery for the patient.

The rehabilitation unit for spinal cord injury is also the only unit in the region funded by the New York State Department of Health. Funding has allowed the rehabilitative team to participate in research to find new methods to help restore function in patients with spinal cord injuries.
