Healing Arts - The Children's Hospital

The Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center provides patients with the benefits of the healing arts programs.  The cornerstone of all complementary therapies is acknowledging that there is integration of body, mind, and spirit.  Today more than 629 million people access some form of complementary therapy or alternative therapies for health promotion and therapeutic treatment for chronic and acute illnesses, pain management, and palliative care.  These non-traditional approaches include, but are not limited to, Healing Touch, Reiki, Massage, Music Therapy, and Expressive Arts Therapy.

Integrative medicine combines treatments from conventional medicine and complementary/ alternative medicine for which there is quality evidence of safety and effectiveness.  Both therapies together address the "whole" person, creating an opportunity for healing not just curing.  Techniques are not dependent on any particular religious belief.

What does a "session" look like?
Patient issues are addressed on an individual basis.  Patients frequently remain in their beds or seated in a chair to receive a session.  Patients remain clothed and all therapies are non-invasive.  Music therapy may be done in a group setting.*

What does a "session" feel like*?
During the Reiki, Healing Touch, or Massage therapy treatment,** light touch may be administered.  The client may experience heat from the practitioner's hands, or a gentle tingling, or nothing at all.  Most clients experience a profound state of relaxation.

*Individual responses may vary.  Music and expressive therapy is passive or active depending on the clients desired involvment.  Family members are encouraged to be involved in the sessions.
**Parental permission obtained for some therapies.
